課程概述 |
Why Mahler's music and fin-de-siecle Vienna remain central events in the birth of modern culture? Taking Mahler's Symphonies No. 8-10 and The Song of the Earth as examples, we want to listen and understand them in the context of Viennese modernism. Though his contemporaries regarded Mahler as a cultural conservative, there are aspects of innovation, rebellion and resistance in his work to be interpreted by later critics like Adorno.
Our lectures will be complemented by multimedia presentations, with the course home page at CEIBA providing a platform for information and interaction. There’ll be weekly listening, reading or writing assignments, as well as a group project to foster peer discussion and critical thinking. Course materials are in English, but lecture mainly in Mandarin.

To understand and reflect critically on Mahler's music and his time, and pars pro toto to Western art music and its meaning for us today. Thinking with music can transform our consciousness and act as critique of reason (Adorno); there's certainly more to music than just appreciation and "beautiful play of sensations" (Kant). |

Passion, participation, punctuality!
Basic reading skills in music and English are also expected. Moreover, a sharp mind (sleep more--but before class please) and a sensitive heart (music moves!) are expected. Please reserve an average of 4 hours per week for listening and other assignments. We'll be screening a few films together, tentatively on Thursday evening. |
